The Reality of Tile Shower Maintenance
Here's what many tile manufacturers and installers won't emphasize enough: tile showers require ongoing, active maintenance to stay looking their best and to prevent water damage. This isn't a set-it-and-forget-it investment.
Monthly Maintenance Tasks
- Clean grout lines with a brush and pH-neutral cleaner to prevent mold and mildew buildup
- Wipe down tile surfaces after each use to prevent hard water deposits and soap scum
- Ventilate the bathroom during and after showers to reduce humidity that promotes mold
- Check caulk seams for signs of cracking or separation that could allow water infiltration
Annual Maintenance Tasks
- Deep clean all tile and grout with specialized grout cleaner and tile scrubber
- Re-seal natural stone tiles (marble, travertine, slate) every 1-2 years to prevent staining
- Inspect and replace worn caulk around shower edges, corners, and fixture connections
- Check for loose or cracked tiles that could indicate underlying issues
